Maleficent: Mistress of Evil (Spoiler-Free Review)

Posted in TV/Film/Books

First of all, let’s not pretend that the iconic combination of Angelina Jolie and Michelle Pfeiffer wasn’t already enough to make me want to see this film. As suspected, both of these Hollywood queens gave incredible performances and both looked incredible throughout in costume pieces that were absolutely stunning. And that’s not to discount Elle Fanning who has come into her own in this movie, delivering an equally beautiful and dynamic performance.

Fellow blogger friends and myself at the IMAX screening of Maleficent: Mistress of Evil

Maleficent: Mistress of Evil picks up 5 years after the first Maleficent. Aurora–having been raised by her godmother, Maleficent– is now queen of the Moors and as we see in the trailer, Prince Phillip has just proposed. But the impending union proves to be more complex than either of them or even Maleficent herself could have imagined.

Maleficent as a character has always walked the line between “hero” and “villain.” She really isn’t any single archetype, but a complex character that can be both maternal and vengeful simultaneously. This movie reminds us that the difference between who is “good” and who’s “bad” is often just about perspective.

The film also answers lingering questions from the first film, such as “why is Maleficent different from all of the other fairies?” We take a deep dive into her ancestry and learn along with Maleficent who she is and where she comes from.

At its core, this Maleficent sequel is a story about family and what that means. The audience will watch these characters define for themselves the meaning of love and learn what it truly means to accept yourself and others for who they are.

Maleficent: Mistress of Evil will be in theaters this Friday, October 18, 2019.

Special thanks to both IMAX and Disney Studios for inviting me to see early screenings of the movie.
