Despicable Me Character Breakfast at Universal Orlando Resort

Posted in Adventures, Field Trips and Travel Diaries, and Food

Here’s something you might not already know about me… I love the Despicable Me franchise. On a recent visit to Universal Studios Orlando I discovered that my hotel, Lowes Royal Pacific Resort offers a Despicable Me Character Breakfast! Never being one to pass up an opportunity to hug a minion, I immediately booked a reservation.

If you’re heading to Universal Orlando Resort any time soon and are considering the Despicable Me Character Breakfast, here are a few things I think you should know:

Here are the basics.
The breakfast costs $34.99 per adult and $20.99 per child (3-9).
This is a buffet-style communal dining experience located in the Tahitian Room at Lowes Royal Pacific Resort at Universal Orlando.
The Despicable Me character breakfast features Gru, the girls (Edith, Margo, and Agnes), and a couple of minions and is offered year-round on Saturdays for seatings at 8:00am, 9:30am, and 11:00am.

Anyone can book a reservation.
Though I must admit that it was incredibly convenient to just walk right downstairs from my hotel room, you do not have to be a guest at Lowes Royal Pacific or any other Universal Orlando Resort to make a reservation. So if you’ve got a Minion-lover in your family but are staying elsewhere, this character breakfast is still available to you.

The menu is simple, but satisfying.
Ok, let’s be real for a second. If you’re looking for a fancy Saturday brunch… this isn’t it. That said, if you’re looking for a cute, energizing breakfast before heading into the theme parks for the day, this character breakfast is just that. After a buffet of pancakes, pastries, eggs, fruit, and a cereal bar (there is also bacon and sausage available but I’m a vegetarian) I felt just satiated enough to head out for a full day in the Universal Orlando theme parks without feeling sluggish or overly full. I know that when I’m traveling with my kids, it can be hard to get them to sit down long enough to eat a substantial breakfast in the midst of all their excitement. So having Gru and the gang there keeps things exciting until it’s time to go ride Minion Mayhem.

Speaking of kids, they’re not a requirement to attend this breakfast.
I take great pride in being a “kid at heart” and wouldn’t have minded being the only kidless adult there. But to my surprise, we were not the only adults with no children attending the Despicable Me Character Breakfast. There were actually quite a few small groups and couples that did not have any kids with them at all.
The dining room is set up with large round tables and guests are seated with other guests who have the same reservation time. I have a few things to say about this. On the one hand, it’s not ideal for introverts. I initially felt quite anxious having to sit at a table with strangers as I am not usually a fan of forced socialization. But we got incredibly lucky in that we were sat next to some pretty fun people– a couple from England there on holiday with their young daughter, and a single man from Toronto in a fun Minion shirt. We talked about our trips so far, and shared favorite rides and tips we’d learned. It was pretty fun breakfast conversation.

Take advantage of the Meet and Greet outside.
Once you’ve checked in, you’ll have the optional opportunity to take a photo with some of the characters outside. This photo op is free of charge and I highly recommend it because the outdoor lighting makes for a much better keepsake photo than the light inside the character breakfast. And speaking of photos, bring your camera (not that you wouldn’t already have your phone with you anyway). While there are plenty of staff members on hand to happily take your photo with the characters as they come around to your table, they are not equipped with cameras so be sure yours is ready to hand them.

Universal Orlando Resort Despicable Me Character Breakfast

Overall the Despicable Me Character Breakfast was an adorable experience. The best part for me was definitely the convenience of being able to just take the elevator down from my hotel room at Lowes Royal Pacific and enjoy a quick and entertaining breakfast with adorable characters before heading in to the theme parks. The lines to meet Gru, the girls, and the minions inside Universal Studios can get pretty long so being able to skip that and have this personal time with them was a definite treat.

You can book your reservation for the Despicable Me Character Breakfast through the Universal Orlando Resort website here.
